About Raptors
The region offers large numbers of raptors both in species and the number of individuals. Black Kites are by far the most numerous species with aggregations in the hundreds not unusual. Whistling Kites are probably the second most numerous species and often seen soaring together with Black Kites. On the coast and large rivers and lakes, the Eastern Osprey is common with breeding pairs spaced at regular intervals, often using human structures for their conspicuous nesting sites. Brahminy Kites are common within a few Kilometres of the coast and use more discrete nesting sites.
White Bellied Sea Eagles are less common, this may be due to competition with Eastern Ospreys. In Victoria where Ospreys are not present Sea Eagles reach much higher densities.
In rainforest and forest margins Brown and Grey Goshawks, Collard Sparrow Hawks and Pacific Bazas are frequently observed. Falcons are also well represented with Peregrine, and Brown falcons present together with the Australian Hobby and Nankeen Kestrel. Black and Grey falcons are rare visitors.
